The three things you need
- Time: minimum 6 hour layover. That covers immigration, a Grand Mosque visit, and the return buffer. Measure it from scheduled landing to scheduled departure, not from the time you reach the gate.
- A visa or visa-free entry: many nationalities receive a free visa on arrival; others need a pre-arranged e-visa. Our visa guide lists every nationality, or send your passport country on WhatsApp and we confirm in minutes.
- Your luggage sorted: bags checked through? Walk out light. Otherwise they ride safely in our vehicle. See the luggage guide for left luggage options at the airport.
Layover, transit or stopover: which one are you on?
A layover or transit is a connection of under 24 hours between two flights on one ticket. You are a transit passenger, your checked bags go through automatically, and you can leave the airport as long as you clear immigration and return in time. A stopover is a stay of 24 hours or more and is treated as a normal visit. This page covers layovers of 6 to 24 hours. For longer stays see the 24 hour layover guide.
How the timeline actually works
- Land and clear immigrationTypically 30 to 45 minutes at Zayed International. Follow signs for Arrivals, not Transfers. Smart gates are available for many passports and take under five minutes.
- Tour the cityGrand Mosque alone needs about 4 hours door-to-door; add the Louvre and palaces with 8 or more. Your driver meets you at Starbucks in the arrivals hall with a name board and your hand luggage stays in the vehicle.
- Return 2 hours before departureInternational gates close 20 minutes before the time on your ticket. You go through security again on the way back in, but not immigration, because you are re-entering the transit area on the same ticket.
Worked example. Land 08:00, depart 16:00. Immigration done by 08:45. Grand Mosque tour 09:00 to 13:00. Back at departures 13:00, three hours before the flight. That is an 8 hour layover with time to spare. With a 6 hour layover the same tour returns you exactly 2 hours before departure, which is the minimum we accept.
Which tour fits your layover
- 6 to 8 hours: Grand Mosque Layover Tour, 4 hours, AED 225 per adult.
- 8 to 12 hours: Grand Layover Tour, 8 hours with the Louvre Abu Dhabi, AED 390 per adult.
- 12 hours or more: Private Custom Tour, or add the Desert Safari.
What if my layover is under 6 hours?
Stay airside. Rushing immigration twice for a 30-minute glimpse isn't worth the stress, and we'll tell you so honestly. Save the city for a longer stop. Zayed International's Terminal A has sleeping pods, shower suites, pay per use lounges and a full food hall, so a short layover is comfortable. Our inside Zayed Airport guide covers what is where.
